Long white stone cottage with a roofer on a ladder at the eaves and new black gutter lengths on the ground

Stone cottage gutter and downpipe replacement

Long run of old gutters on a stone-fronted cottage replaced with new black gutters and downpipes.

  • Stone cottage frontage
  • Full gutter run replaced
  • New black gutters and downpipes

Photos from the job

A long, low stone cottage needed its gutters and downpipes replaced along the full frontage. The old sections were taken down and new black gutters were fitted to suit the character of the building.

Why gutters matter on old cottages

Solid stone walls get wet whenever gutters overflow or leak at the joints. Over time that leads to damp patches inside, stained render and frost damage to the stone.

Long frontages need a proper fall to the outlets. If the gutter sags or the brackets are too far apart, water sits in the middle and spills over in heavy rain.

Choosing the right finish

Black gutters and downpipes suit most cottages and period houses and blend in with dark slate roofs. They were fitted along the whole frontage so the run looks consistent.

Replacing the whole run at once avoids mixing old and new sections that never quite line up.
