Photos from the job

A hipped bungalow roof was stripped and re-covered in brown Double Roman interlocking tiles. The hips and ridge were finished with a dry fix system, so nothing along the top of the roof relies on mortar to stay in place.

Why the hips mattered on this roof

A hipped bungalow has four sloping sides, so it has far more hip and ridge length than a simple gable roof. On older roofs those hips are usually bedded in mortar, which cracks, loosens and eventually lets hip tiles slip after years of wind and rain.

On this job every hip tile was mechanically clipped over a dry hip roll. The close-up photo shows the clips at each joint. There is no mortar to wash out, and the hip line stays straight and ventilated.

Choosing Double Roman tiles

Double Roman tiles have a deep double roll profile that suits bungalows and 1960s to 1980s homes. They are quick to lay, interlock at the sides, and give a traditional look without the weight or cost of clay.

Brown was chosen to keep the roof in character with the house. If you are replacing a roof like this, it is worth asking which colours and profiles match the neighbouring properties.

“[The roofer] has just completed my bungalow roof, a [complicated] job with hips and dormers. The workmanship is exceptional and all completed in a very short period of time.”
